The American rapper known as Machine Gun Kelly or MKG was born Richard Colson Baker in 1990 in Houston, Texas. Richard spent his young years traveling around the world with his parents, who were missionaries, bringing him to cities such as Denver and Cleveland, and to various countries throughout Europe. As a teenager, Richard became fascinated with burgeoning rap artists such as Eminem and DMX, eventually adopting the stage name Machine Gun Kelly and determining to pursue a career as a rap artist himself.
In the mid 2000’s, Machine Gun Kelly became one of the few Caucasian rappers to win in competition at Harlem’s Apollo Theater, but for much of the decade MGK struggled to find success with his music. Through the independent record label Block Starz Music, Machine Gun Kelly recorded a number of mixtapes and eventually made his national debut on iTunes with the song “Alice in Wonderland.” Heavy airplay and a number of live performances followed, including a set at the SXSW festival in Texas, where MGK garnered the attention of Sean Combs and Bad Boy Records.
After signing with the label, Machine Gun Kelly released his debut album, Lace Up, in 2012. The album performed moderately well, but it was the follow-up album, General Admission, which debuted in the top five on the mainstream charts upon its release in 2015. The album features guest appearances by multiple big-name artists, including French Montana, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, and Kid Rock. The album has spawned the singles “Till I Die,” “ A Little More,” and “World Series.”
Machine Gun Kelly’s career is still on the rise and he is definitely a musician to watch in the coming years. MGK’s most recent release is the single “Gone,” from his album General Admission.
