Remy Ma Biography
The Grammy-nominated rapper known as Remy Ma was born Reminisce Smith in 1980 in the Bronx, New York. Before Remy Ma rose to become one of the only female rappers to place a song at the number one position on the mainstream charts, she grew up in an environment of poverty and drug addiction. While some teenagers may have succumbed to the pressures of their surroundings, Remy instead grew up quickly, taking care of her younger siblings and turning to poetry and rap as an outlet for her feelings.
In high school, Remy began rapping, and her talents quickly caught the attention of the late MC Big Pun. Big Pun became her mentor, inviting her to appear on his albums and making her a part of the group Terror Squad. After leaving Terror Squad in 2007, Remy Ma released her debut album, There’s Something About Remy: Based on a True Story (2006.) The album was successful, but Remy Ma’s career as a solo performer was cut short after her unfortunate involvement in a shooting in 2008. The incident led to Remy Ma’s incarceration, which put her career on temporary hold.
Remy Ma was recently released from prison in 2014, and she now has plans to return to music. Expect an additional album and appearances from Remy Ma in the coming years.
