The rapper known as Chief Keef was born Keith Cozard in 1995 in Chicago. Keith fell in love with rap at a very early age, and when he was still in elementary school he was using a karaoke machine to begin performing his own raps. Cozard did not excel in school, dropping out at the age of fifteen, and a subsequent weapons charge as a teenager left him on house arrest, during which he took the opportunity to spend time recording his own performances and uploading them to YouTube.
Dubbing himself Chief Keef, Keef began to garner interest via the internet, and the feedback encouraged him to record his own mixtapes, distributing them locally. The tapes began to garner him some attention from the likes of Kanye West, who recognized Keef’s talents and took the young star under his wing. By 2012, a bidding war for Chief Keef’s contract ensued, and he eventually settled on Interscope Records, which would permit him to run his own label and maintain certain levels of creative oversight.
In December of 2012, Chief Keef released his debut album, Finally Rich, which featured appearances by a number of guest performers, including Rick Ross and 50 Cent. At the age of only eighteen, Chief Keef found himself with a highly successful debut album, and he followed up with two more mixtapes: Bang Part 2 and Almighty Sosa. His mixtapes and albums have spawned the top forty rap singles “I Don’t Like” (featuring Lil Reese); “Love Sosa”; “Hate Bein’ Sober” (with 50 Cent and Wiz Khalifa); and “Fuck Rehab.”
Despite recent legal entanglements, Chief Keef is currently preparing for the release of his next mixtape, Bang 3, and making plans for future albums set for release in the coming years.
