City Girls Biography
City Girls is a female hip-hop duo composed of Caresha Romenka Brownlee (Yung Miami) and Jatavia Shakara Johnson (JT). The group originates from Miami, Florida, and was started after both rappers were signed to Quality Control Music. The City Girls experienced success after their debut track “Fuck Dat N*gga” gained local prominence and online streams. During that time, member JT was sentenced to federal prison time but had her surrender date pushed back into the next year.
During 2018 before JT’s sentence, City Girls dropped a video for their track and released their debut project Period two months before JT went to prison. It ended p on many year-end lists and they were later featured on Drake’s hit “In My Feelings.” Their debut album Girl Code topped off the year and featured verses from Cardi B and Lil Baby. Both “Twerk” and “Act Up” introduced City Girls to a more mainstream audience in 2019.
City Girls’ EP Period peaked at #16 on the Billboard US Heat chart. Their album Girl Code would peak at #55 on the Billboard 200 and #31 on the US R&B/Hip-Hop chart. City Girl’s experienced success in 2019 with their Cardi B assisted single “Twerk being certified platinum and peaking at #29 on the Billboard Hot 100. Their next single, “Act Up,” went viral and was also certified Platinum while peaking at #26 on the Hot 100.
Before JT’s release in October of 2019, Yung Miami announced City Girls would be working on a new project due out in the spring of 2020.
