The hip-hop artist known as GZA was born Gary Grice in 1966. Before GZA rose to fame as a member of the iconic hip hop group Wu-Tang Clan, he performed with a number of small groups while still a teenager growing up in the New York area. GZA signed first as a solo artist to Cold Chillin’ Records under the moniker The Genius, but by the early 1990’s he’d joined the Wu-Tang Clan.
As a member of the Wu-Tang Clan, GZA enjoyed a decade of continued success, but in 1995, he released his own solo album, Liquid Swords. The album rose to the number two spot on the R&B charts and also into the top ten on the mainstream charts, launching GZA’s career as a successful solo artist. Four more albums followed: Beneath the Surface (1999), Legend of the Liquid Sword (2002), GrandMasters (2005), and Pro Tools (2008.) Notable R&B hits from the albums include: “Liquid Swords”; “Cold World”; “Shadowboxin” (featuring Method Man); and “Breaker, Breaker.”
During this time, GZA continued to appear on Wu-Tang Clan albums, and also on his fellow members’ solo projects. GZA’s legacy in the hip-hop world is notable; Allmusic ranks him among the best lyricists of the decade, and he appears on the Source’s list of Top 50 Lyricists of All Time. GZA most recently released the solo album Dark Matter, in 2014.
