The rap group Three 6 Mafia originated in Memphis, Tennessee in 1991. Originally known as Backyard Posse, the group rose to fame after their song “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp” was featured in the 2005 film Hustle and Flow, garnering critical acclaim and an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
Prior to that distinction, however, Three 6 Mafia came together when Lord Infamous, Juicy J, and DJ Paul began writing and recording music together. The group released the album Mystic Stylez in 1995, and followed up with the albums Chapter 1: The End (1996), Chapter 2: World Domination (1997), When the Smoke Clears: Sixty 6, Sixty 1 (2000), Choices: The Album (2001), and Da Unbreakables (2003) before becoming a household name with “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp.” During this time, Three 6 Mafia became as well known for their contributions to the careers of other artists as much as their own, propelling the likes of Lil Wyte, La Chat, and Project Pat to success.
After the success of “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp,” Three 6 Mafia forged forward to enjoy additional success, appearing on Justin Timberlake’s FutureSex/LoveSounds album and releasing the albums Most Known Unknown (2005), Most Known Hits (2005), and Last 2 Walk (2008.) Members of Three 6 Mafia have also appeared in a variety of television shows, including The Simple Life (2006), Entourage (2006), Rob & Big (2006), Mind of Mencia (2007), and The Mo’Nique Show (2010), performing their iconic hit singles.
Three 6 Mafia continues to perform and record, and even recently announced the release of a much-anticipated album in 2014.
